Sauroposéidon

The name of this dinosaur means “Poseidon lizard.” It is associated with the god of the sea and earthquakes, for its size and power, as it is believed that with its size, it made the earth tremble as it moved.

In May 1994, Sauroposeidon fossils revealed a neck almost 12 meters long, the longest ever discovered. One of the vertebrae measures almost 1.40 meters.

It is difficult to state with certainty that this species was the largest dinosaur that ever existed. To interpret its size and weight, the discovered bones were compared to those of the Giraffatitan, another massive sauropod. It turned out that the sauroposeidon’s neck was even longer than that of the giraffatitan.

To be able to support such an impressive neck, the bones were hollow and particularly thin like those of birds.

As the only one in its environment with such an impressive size, the sauroposeidon had privileged access to the tallest vegetation.
