Animals in Hot and Cold Climates

Nature has given animals around the world remarkable adaptations that children will discover through hands-on activities with educational materials.

Introduction to Animal Classification

In the first part, an educator guides students through the zoo to observe the animals and their traits, then use what they find to complete a two-way table.

In the second part, indoors, students work with the educator to create a nested classification of the species they observed at the zoo. They explore the concepts of shared traits, heredity, and relatedness.

Discover the Zoo

Why do zoos exist, and what do they do every day?

Today’s zoos are no longer places to display animals. They’re centers for education, conservation, and research.

In small groups, children explore the needs of different animals, then use educational materials to design a habitat where those animals can thrive.

Classification

In the first part, an educator guides students through the zoo to observe the animals and their traits, then use what they find to complete a two-way table.

Next, indoors, students draw on their observations to understand how scientists classify life today and in the past. Finally, in small groups, students study different groups of animals to understand the processes that give rise to biodiversity on Earth.

The Role of a Zoo

Today’s zoos are no longer places to display animals. They’re centers for education, conservation, and research. As biodiversity declines, zoos play a vital role in protecting it.

Zoo Careers

“How do you become a zookeeper?”

“What kinds of jobs are there at a zoo?”

These are questions many people have. In this workshop, students can explore the different animal-related careers at the zoo through fun activities. They’ll also learn about the education and training that can help turn a dream into a career.

Veterinarians, zookeepers, educators, ethologists… these rewarding professionals help keep animals healthy and thriving every day while also working to protect the biodiversity around us.

Evolution and Classification

In this workshop, students will learn that life on Earth has both shared characteristics and diversity, and that biodiversity is constantly changing as a result of different forces.

Students will also explore the impact of human activity on biodiversity and look at ways to reduce it.

A Zoo Working for Biodiversity

Today’s zoos are no longer places to display animals. They’re centers for education, conservation, and research. As biodiversity declines, zoos play a vital role in protecting it.

In small groups, students examine real examples of animal species that zoos play a major role in protecting. At the end of the workshop, each group presents its findings to the rest of the class.
