Parasaurolophus

“Like Saurolophus”, as it greatly resembles that species.

The Parasaurolophus is distinguished by its duck-billed mouth and the long bony crest extending backward from its head. This could reach nearly 1.80 m long.

This crest was hollow, starting from the animal’s nostrils, with a kind of tube running along its entire length and then returning to the skull, forming a loop. Even today, the purpose of this ornament has not been clearly identified, but it is suggested that the Parasaurolophus blew into this crest to produce loud sounds, for example, to communicate with its peers. By blowing through this crest, scientists were able to get an idea of the sound it produced. It sounded like a deep trumpet-like call.

It is thought that this crest certainly had other functions, such as regulating its body temperature. Fossils allow us to say that it differed in size and shape between individuals, but also between males and females.

The mode of locomotion of this species is still debated today. Its anatomy indicates that it spent most of its time on all fours, but that it was also capable of bipedal movement.

This dinosaur was herbivorous, its beak was toothless but the back of its jaw showed a row of teeth, only part of which was used. As soon as some became too worn, they were replaced, and this happened continuously.

The idea has been suggested that it must have lived in herds in order to protect itself from predators.
