The Baryonyx was discovered in 1983. Its name means “strong claw“, and indeed it had a huge claw about 30 cm long on the first finger of each hand.
It is part of the same family as Spinosaurus but was much smaller. The silhouettes of both are similar and the skull shapes alike. The head of this dinosaur looked like a crocodile’s. 96 conical teeth filled its jaw.
The Baryonyx was bipedal, its long tail served as a balance. The snout of this dinosaur was fragile, but it had a broad diet. It fished for fish or was content with eating carrion, thus playing the ecological role of a cleaner.
It is believed that this dinosaur could swim, but it is not certain.
