Coelophysis means “hollow form” in Ancient Greek. This refers to the lightweight build and hollow bones of this dinosaur. Its slender shape was adapted for speed, and it could run up to 45 km/h.
There is sexual dimorphism between the male and the female. This carnivore could feed on fish and insects. It had a crest on top of its head. Its usefulness has not yet been demonstrated; it could serve for mating displays, species recognition, or even for communication. These sturdy claws could have allowed it to climb. Its long tail may have served as a balance and to make quick movements.
