Dilophosaurus means reptile with two crests. They were probably brightly colored to intimidate rivals or used for mating displays.
The Dilophosaurus was popularized through the film Jurassic Park in 1993. It is depicted as small, spitting venom and having a frill. At the time, this dinosaur was little known; this depiction was not based on any fossil evidence. Today, it is considered a super-predator, weighing between 400 and 750 kg depending on the sources, reaching 6 meters long and 3 meters high. This carnivore could hunt plateosaurs but also smaller prey. Several fossils have been found close to each other, which could indicate that they lived in groups.
It lived in what is now Arizona in North America during a period between 201 and 174 million years ago.
