The red panda lives in the coniferous forests of the Himalayas, between 2,200 and 4,800 meters in altitude. It is easily recognizable by its red fur, hence its name. Contrary to popular belief, it is not related to the giant panda. The latter is a bear and is part of the ursidae family, while the red panda is part of the ailuridae family, of which it is the only member on Earth! However, both possess a pseudo-opposable thumb that allows them to grab bamboo. “Panda” means bamboo eater in Nepali. The red panda is perfectly adapted to its habitat. It has two layers of fur to protect itself from the cold.
