The arctic wolf, Canis lupus arctos, is one of the many subspecies of wolf. Found in the northern regions of North America, it lives in one of the most hostile environments on our planet, where temperatures reach -50°C. Its white fur helps it blend into a sparsely wooded, so low-shaded environment. The wolf lives in a pack with a strict hierarchy. At the top is a dominant pair, the only ones able to breed. The other pack members are young from different generations. Status in the hierarchy is determined by personality. Many behaviors, postures, and facial expressions are used to show dominance or submission. The dominant holds its tail high and eats first, while a submissive individual tucks its tail between its legs and eats last.
