The orangutan is endemic to the tropical forests of Indonesia. Three species are described: the Sumatran orangutan, the Bornean orangutan, and the Tapanuli orangutan, discovered only in 2017. Arboreal, it spends most of its time in the trees searching for food: flowers, leaves, insects, bark, and fruits. These animals play an important role in seed dispersal. It is part of the group of great apes, like us. In fact, we share over 96% of our genetic heritage. The young stays with its mother until 8-9 years old to acquire all the knowledge necessary for survival. There is strong sexual dimorphism: the male is larger, has a thicker coat that serves as armor, like the lion’s mane. Furthermore, he develops a facial mask and a laryngeal sac around age 15 during puberty.
