The giraffe is the largest land mammal! Males can measure up to six metres, while females are no more than five metres long. At birth, the giraffe is already two metres long! It stays with its mother and the other members of the group, which is made up of between 10 and 70 individuals. The group moves around according to food resources, feeding on their daily 66 kg of leaves, flowers and fruit. Its long neck and 50 cm long tongue enable it to reach the highest leaves. Because of its size, the giraffe is considered to be the sentinel of the savannah. It sees predators coming from afar and quickly moves off, followed by other, smaller animals that have not yet perceived the threat.
