Carpathian lynx

The Carpathian lynx is one of six subspecies of the boreal lynx. It is the largest wild feline in Europe and the biggest predator after the brown bear and the wolf. As its name suggests, it is found in the Carpathian mountains of central Europe, as well as here in France. The lynx is easily recognised by its short tail ending in a black tip and the tuft of black hair, called a ‘brush’, at the end of its ears. According to the latest hypotheses, these hairs help it to sense the direction of the wind more easily, making it easier to locate its prey. Strictly carnivorous, 90% of its diet consists of roe deer and chamois.
