The geographic range of the lowland tapir extends over most of the tropical forests in South America. It has a funny-looking snout. In fact, its upper lip and “nose” have fused to form a prehensile trunk. A herbivore, it feeds mainly on fruits, leaves, and other plants. Its trunk, very practical, lets it grab its food more easily. It can also use it as a snorkel when hiding in the water to escape from predators. It’s a solitary and nocturnal animal that is an excellent swimmer. Therefore, it is difficult to observe in its natural habitat. Its closest relatives are rhinoceroses and horses.
