The red panda lives in the coniferous forests of the Himalayas, at altitudes of between 2,200 and 4,800 metres. It is easily recognised by its red coat, hence its name. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the cousin of the giant panda. The latter is a bear, part of the ursidae family, whereas the red panda is part of the ailuridae family, of which it is the only representative on Earth! However, both have an opposable pseudo-thumb that enables them to grab bamboo. Panda’ means “bamboo eater” in Nepalese. The red panda is perfectly adapted to its habitat. It has 2 layers of hair to protect itself from the cold.
