The Arctic wolf, Canis lupus arctos, is one of the many subspecies of wolf. Found in the northern regions of North America, it lives in one of the most hostile environments on our planet, where temperatures can reach -50°C. The wolf’s white coat allows it to be camouflaged in an environment with few trees and little shade. The wolf lives in a pack with a strict hierarchy. At the top of the hierarchy is a dominant couple, the only ones able to reproduce. The other members of the pack are the young of different generations. Rank in the hierarchy is determined by character. Many behaviours, postures and facial expressions are used to show dominance or submission. The dominant dog carries its tail erect and eats first, while the dominated dog tucks its tail between its legs and eats last.
